Source Filmmaker Render Settings and Export Workflow

Rendering should be the final step of a workflow you have already tested, not the first time you inspect a scene. A reliable SFM export process checks composition, animation, lighting and output settings in short previews before you render the final sequence.
Prepare the scene before rendering
Save a working session before making final changes. Review the camera, timeline range, character poses, lighting, material paths and any hidden or unintended objects. Play through the full shot to check for missing keyframes, clipping and abrupt changes that may not be obvious in a single frame.
Choose the output for the project
Decide where the result will be used before choosing a resolution or frame range. A still image, short social clip and longer sequence can have different practical requirements. Higher resolution and longer frame ranges increase render time and storage needs, so test a representative section before committing to the whole project.
Use preview renders to find problems early
Render a few representative frames or a short section that includes motion, shadows and important material details. Inspect the output at its intended display size. Look for flickering, missing materials, unexpected shadows, clipped subjects and camera movement that feels too fast or too slow. Correct the cause before rendering the full sequence.
Keep output files organized
Use a consistent folder structure for project sessions, preview renders and final exports. Give each test a clear name and avoid overwriting the only copy of a final render. If you export image sequences, keep the frame order and any conversion settings documented so you can recreate the result later.
Check the exported result
Do not assume a render is correct because the progress indicator completed. Open the output and review the beginning, middle and end. For a sequence, confirm that frames are present in order and that there are no missing or duplicate frames. If you convert the sequence to video in another application, verify the frame rate, duration and audio sync there as well.
Common render problems
- Missing or purple materials: verify material files and paths with the texture troubleshooting guide.
- Unexpected camera framing: confirm the active camera and review the shot range before rendering.
- Large render times: test a shorter section, reduce unnecessary scene complexity and verify the intended output settings.
- Missing frames or incomplete output: check the output directory, available disk space and render range.
- Changes not reflected: confirm that the saved session and intended shot are the ones being rendered.
Build a repeatable export checklist
- Save a new version of the session.
- Review the active camera and shot range.
- Render a short preview and inspect it outside the viewport.
- Verify material appearance, motion and composition.
- Render the final range to a clearly named folder.
- Inspect the final output and keep a backup of the session.
If you are new to SFM, begin with the beginner guide. For models that will not load or compile correctly, use the compile workflow guide. Good project organization and small verification steps make later revisions much easier.
